Kochi Water Metro and Kochi Metro: How India Most Unique Transit Integration Works
Kochi's water metro and rail metro now operate as an integrated transit system — the first of its kind in India.
Kochi has achieved something no other Indian city has: a fully integrated water metro and rail metro network. The Kochi Water Metro connects 10 islands and the mainland via electric boat services, seamlessly linked with the Kochi Metro rail network at select stations.
Integration points:
•High Court Junction metro station ↔ High Court Jetty (water metro)
•Vyttila metro station ↔ Vyttila Mobility Hub (water metro + bus)
•MG Road (Ernakulam) metro ↔ Boat Jetty at Marine Drive
The One Kochi card works on both the rail metro and water metro, allowing seamless journeys across modes with a single tap.
This model is being studied by transportation planners from Mumbai, Chennai, and international cities as a blueprint for multi-modal urban transit integration.
